「火星に虹が出現？」探査車の写真に世界が騒然

地球に比べると非常に薄い大気しかないはずの火星で虹が出現したのだろうか。NASAの公式見解はなかったが、世界中のSNSで話題となり「雲の中の氷の結晶に反射した結果だ」「大気中のチリが原因だ」などと推測する声が相次いでいた。

しかし、気象の専門家であるマーシャル・シェパード博士がForbesに記事を寄稿したことで真相が明らかになった。

シェパード博士の取材に、NASAの太陽系探査計画を指揮するデイブ・ラベリー氏は「絶対に虹ではない。カメラレンズの内部反射だ」という見解を示したという。
「これらの写真が撮影されたのは火星の現地時間午後2時。カメラはほぼ真っ直ぐ南を向いている」とラベリー氏は指摘した。これらの条件は、カメラ内部で反射光が生じやすいという。
