州当局によると、モックさんはクマ撃退用のスプレーを持っていたが、これを使って反撃できたかどうかは明らかでない。

森林管理当局者やクマの専門家を含む７人の調査チームが１６日、市民へのリスクなどを判断するために現地入りしたが、襲撃現場まで到達する前に「高齢の雄のグリズリー」に襲われた。チームは撃退を試みたがグリズリーはそのまま向かってきたため、メンバーが射殺した。

当局によると、イエローストーンには１９７９年以降、１億１８００万人が訪れた。この間に４４人が園内でグリズリーに襲われて負傷した。
