ピザチェーン大手のドミノ・ピザがこのほど、テキサス州ヒューストン市で自動運転車によるピザの宅配サービスを開始した。ニューロが手掛ける完全自立型の車両がピザを配達する。

ヒューストン市ウッドランドハイツ地区の顧客は自動運転車による配達を選ぶことができ、車両の位置といった情報をテキストで受け取れるほか、商品を受け取るための数字コードも送られてくる。利用者は車両が到着したらタッチスクリーンに数字を入力し、開いた扉から食べ物を受け取る。

自動配達の分野に進出したのはドミノが初めてではない。２０１７年には米ミシガン州を拠点にする企業が自動運転車を使って無作為に選ばれた利用者にピザを届けた。ドミノは２０１３年にはドローン（無人機）を使った配送を英国で試験していた。
